Laziness can be described as not doing what one must while acting as if he’s doing it. Laziness is one of the things plain passion gives us so that we fill our lives with actions that don’t fulfil our mission on the planet.

Some individuals achieve their life’s goals through sheer willpower, rather than solely pursuing their desires. While following one’s heart can be alluring, it doesn’t always present the same level of challenge or necessity. Pursuing passions might lead many to mediocrity because it can encourage the avoidance of necessary tasks. One shouldn’t be considered diligent if one consistently chooses the path of least resistance.

Some individuals may not rise early yet still capitalize on their late starts. Musicians, for example, might compose songs while still in bed, and parents might effectively raise their children without resorting to corporal punishment. These people may not fit the traditional mould of hardworking, but neither are they lazy. Their approach is often regarded as smart.

Success often requires more preparatory work than the actual task at hand. Those who achieve success are not necessarily the ones who worked the hardest, but rather those who thought differently. They stepped outside of conventional thinking patterns and redefined hard work as smart work. Smart work isn’t about avoiding the actions that led others to failure; it’s about analysing their methods and finding a new, innovative approach.

In essence, one can exhibit traits of both laziness and diligence. Laziness may manifest as a reluctance to be resourceful, focusing instead on distant resources beyond one’s immediate reach. For instance, I might spend two years waiting to acquire a laptop to start blogging, neglecting the potential of a more accessible and cheaper smartphone in my hands that only needs a WordPress app. Being resourceful, on the other hand, involves maximizing available resources and employing basic methods to generate capital.

We have been taught that through hardwork we change the odds. So we work hard and not smart. Some differences between hard workers and smart workers are:

• Hard workers often view wealth as something that exists in specific locations or within certain groups of people. Here in Africa, many undertake perilous journeys across deserts and seas in pursuit of this wealth, while others who choose to remain may invest in starting their own small but profitable businesses. The amounts of money required for these two options are the same but the latter is rewarding.
• A smart worker is indifferent to their initial circumstances; they are confident that their vision can come to fruition regardless of the humble beginnings they may choose. His vision can materialise at any poor place of his choice.
• Hard workers often prefer the stability of a job and a consistent salary to meet their lifelong needs, even if it means accepting a limited income that may not bring complete satisfaction.
• A smart worker, seen as unconventional, understands the value of acquiring capital and knowledge. They believe it’s preferable to endure financial scarcity in their twenties rather than to be confined to a life of modest earnings and savings.

Smartworkers often start by challenging cultural norms and prevailing attitudes, which can make them seem out of place among their peers. Initially, they may be perceived as irrational or even unstable, and society is quick to dismiss them as unsuccessful. However, once they demonstrate success, their methods are celebrated. Smart work is only recognized for its genius after it yields impressive results; until then, it’s often dismissed as frivolous. In contrast, hard work is visible and thus commended, but it doesn’t always lead to significant achievements. It may involve repeating past mistakes or not innovating beyond what has been done before.
